Unique Hunting Lodge on a Centuries Old Estate
A unique hunting-lodge, in the heart of the Argonne forest, on a centuries old estate with its hilltop Chateau, Pigeonnier and Park in the Champagne.
The hunting-lodge is part of an estate of 6 ha with a park and a XVIth-XVIIIth century castle on a hill top with beautiful views on unspoilt countryside and forests. The chateau belonged until 1904 to the family of Adelbert von Chamisso, the famous French born, but German poet (1781-1838), biologist, explorer and creator of Peter Schlemihl, the story of the man who lost his shadow.
The hunting lodge, containing 2 adjacent gites, can be rented as a whole, with 5 bedrooms and two living areas, or can be rented separately: the East Wing (App I ) has three bedrooms and exclusive access to castle park & pool,; the West Wing ( App II ) has two bedrooms.
Apart from the castle park, where also the swimmingpool is situated, accessible for the guests of App.I, the hunting lodge itself is surrounded by 3ha of garden and an orchard to discover and appreciate, and to enjoy the free collection of fresh sherries, plums, walnuts, apples and peers, depending on the season. This is at the exclusive disposal of both the guests of App.I and II.
Available for guests are a barbecue, garden chairs + table, long chairs.
There are 4 bicycles (children age from 3 to 17), and one for adults. Several games, badminton, cricket, jeu de boules.
There is also a children play ground with two swings and a climbing tower (tour mirador), as well as a picnic table, at a convenient distance of the lodge, but within sight when required. As from April 2011 a table tennis facility of top outdoor quality with maximum safety for children and playback possibility for solo practice is available nearby in one of the dependencies of the Chateau.
Moreover, in 2011 the old swimming pool at the park grounds of the Castle has been substituted by one at grass level, 5X10 M in size and 1.20M, respectively 1.80M deep. The pool is covered by a transparent telescopic structure of 15X7X1.90 M, that is easily removable during summer time, but allows swimming not only in July - August, but also in June and September, maybe even in May and October.
The swimming pool is in principle only accessible for the guests of hunting lodge Appt 1, if necessary in consultation with the owner in case he is present at the estate. The guests of hunting lodge Appt 2 have no access to this private pool, unless they rented the whole lodge (West Wing & East Wing)
The forest is at your doorstep. A horse riding club with manege & pony club in the village itself, and simple water games are possible at the lakes nearby. The municipal swimming pool is at 10 km.
For many more pictures and background information on the estate in general and the lodge in particular, as well as for reactions of previous guests, please see our own website.
The hunting lodge West Wing (Semi-Detached Cottage II) has similar features as the adjoining East Wing (Semi-Detached Cottage I), but offers slightly less accommodation:
Ground Floor
- The living room of 35.6 m2 with fully equipped kitchen corner is, like all other living spaces in the lodge, tastefully decorated, with antique or high quality furniture. New (10/8/013) satellite flatscreen Samsung smart TV with smart hub.
- Downstairs toilet
First Floor
- 2 bedrooms (master bedroom (15.8 m2) with double bed and 2nd bedroom (12.6m2) with separable twin beds)
- Toilet
- A bathroom (5.6 m2) with shower and washbasin.
- As from 24 April 2010 connection is possible with the WiFi system in the lodge providing TOOWAY access to high speed internet by satellite (3.6 Mbps / 384 kbps).
No accesss to the swimming pool
The hunting-lodge West Wing (App II) has been renovated to the same high specification as the East Wing (App I ), retaining many original features.
Apart from the kitchen features described above there are also electrical appliances like toaster, water heater, coffee machine, pressure cooker.
For children there are various family games like monopoly, and different card plays, but also chess, video's, DVD's, books, comic strips. Five children bikes (age 3 - 17) and 2 adult bikes are available.
The estate is situated on a hill overlooking the Valley of the river Aisne. At the entrance of a village or about 250 inhabitants. There is a very good and extremely cheap village restaurant nearby. The baker passes by the huntinglodge every day, including sunday with fresh bread. In nearby Sainte Menehould (9 km) there are several supermarkets, restaurants etc
The hunting lodge can be rented as a whole, with 5 bedrooms and two living areas, or can be rented separately. The East Wing part with 3 bedrooms is 40 m2 larger than the West Wing part with two bedrooms, and has a separate high standard kitchen. Moreover it gives exclusive access tot the castle park and its swimmingpool on the estate.
A paradise for horse riding, hunting (sanglier/wild boar, deer), fishing, cross-country biking, walking; water sports and golf at 50 km.
N.B. For Golf and Hunting enthusiasts
For Golf an 18 hole golf course, the Châlons Champagne Golfclub in Courtisols, is available at less than 35 km from the hunting lodge; and at 90 km, near Reims, one can find the well known Championship Golfcourse, Golf de Reims Champagne in Gueux.
For Hunting, this is the only region in France, together with the Alsace, where one can hunt individually (with a guide), in June, July, August and September. Collective hunting with dogs (on average 30 persons) takes place from October through February.

Wow, simply wow. Outstanding accommodation set in a stunning location. The lodge is fully equipped with every necessity. Johannes is a mine of information of the surrounding area and is so knowledgeable about the history of this part of France. Places in easy reach are Reims, Chalons en Champagne, Verdun and Nancy. The Super U in the local town is well stocked with everything you need and at reasonable prices. Kathryn and I have visited France for the past 30 years and we’d have no hesitation in returning to Chateau Villers-en-Argonne. Johannes and his lovely wife are perfect hosts and will always make you welcome. 10/10Guest rating:
What a lovely place this is ! A cozy cottage with a lovely fireplace. The five of us enjoyed our fireworks-free vacation here!
The forests of Châtrices and the town of Verdun with the great history we found verg fun and inters interesting.
Thank you for your hospitality, and the light route !Guest rating:
We had a fantastic stay. Johannes was the perfect host. Enough space for a relaxing time with two teens and a setter. Great base to explore the region.
Trip highlights.
Nancy, beautiful, great shops. Drive, parked in street or underground car park. Remember to take roof pod off!
Strassbourg, « Cuiller au Pot « , Palais de Rohan. Drive was little far for one day.
Reims, « Alba » Lovely and quiet to visit on a Sunday.
Paris, Bistro « Polissons » 20eme, « Chez Prune » 10ème. Drive to Val d‘Europe Park and Ride, RER to canal St Martin (station for Père la Chaise) or central Paris. Easier than Strasbourg!Guest rating:
We have had a wonderful time staying in the Hunting Lodge West Wing. Our family stayed across both houses and it has been amazing to have all this space.
We have loved cooling off in the pool, particularly as we have been lucky enough to stay during a heat wave.
We spent most of our week just relaxing at the lodge, but we did enjoy a day trip to Epernay & sampled the delicious Mercier Champagne. We als had a great visit to Chalons, on recommendation from Johannes, who kindly provided many leaflets and information about the area.
We are sad to be leaving today, but we hope to one day return.Guest rating:
We originally scheduled for summer 2019, but COVID delays + rescheduling interferred.
Our vacation experience has exceeded our expectatations. It has been exceptional ! The facility is perfect for a countryside getaway – beautiful grounds and so peaceful always. We loved our lovely cottage with modern facilities – all the comforts of home.
We used our location as a hub to travel to historical + scenic locations in the NorthEast of France. Our families were unable to to join us – but we are glad to have enjoyed + relaxed in this spacious cotage – all to ourselves.
Dan’s favourite: Vineyard + Wine Tour Champagne L’Hoste (at Bassuet) + Bella (the shepherd of our hosts).
Sherri’s favorites: villiage “experience,” history, customs + people of this area + pool side visits with Bella.
Both of us have enjoyed the marvelous weather and peaceful atmosphere – so relaxing and calm.
Our hosts, Laurence + Johannes are wonderful ! It has been a pleasure to know them. I will call them my “spirit people” for ever. A bientôt à la Belle France !Guest rating:
The country side in France is normally quiet. The area of Villers en Argonne however outscores this feeling. The landscape is wide and wonderful. Traffic is almost absent. The West wing that we occupied is comfortable and the open fire in the living is charming and provides the right atmosphere for enjoying a good wine. The owners of the castle are present in a pleasant way. They provide advice when requested and if you are lucky you get a tour in their wonderful castle.
We enjoyed our stay.
Guest rating:
Super accommodation very well equipped. Owner was very helpful with booking process and whilst we were there. Lots to do in the area. Facilities good including table tennis bikes and skittles. Could easily have had shared access to swimming pool and free wifi but not a huge issue!! Would definitely recommend to others.
