Walnut Cottage (2 bedrooms, sleeps 4) is a pretty stone cottage situated in a rural hamlet surrounded by beautiful countryside just 1 km from the local village of Masserac. It has a large, private and enclosed garden. Well situated for reaching all the beaches and attractions of Southern Brittany and Loire Atlantique.

South Brittany Cottages are situated in a rural hamlet just a gentle 10 minute stroll to the local village of Masserac where you will find a cafe bar and a small grocery shop with fresh bread delivered daily. A little further on, just 3 miles, is the local boulangerie and patisserie, perfect for a morning cycle to buy croissants for breakfast! Just 10 minutes away from the gites are the lively towns of Redon and Guemene-Penfao where you will find supermarkets, outdoor/indoor swimming pools, canoe hire for paddling along the River Don, pony trekking and a good selection of restaurants. There are several wonderful swimming lakes with beaches (always a hit with children) within 15 minutes or if you prefer the coast the stunning beaches of South West Brittany are within easy reach. The beautiful countryside surrounding the cottages is designated as a protected natural habitat, offering a superb area to walk and cycle. There are many marked walking and cycle trails to follow and plenty of opportunities for a picnic! We offer a large range of bicycles from child to adult sizes and for the younger members of the family there are also child seats and child trailers available. Perfect for exploring the area together as a couple, family or friends and all available to use free of charge.
A perfect place to soak up the French culture and sample the local Breton delicacies are the many markets around the area surrounding our gites. Situated between the beautiful cities of Vannes, Nantes and Rennes there are also many other historic towns to discover. or the more energetic, this area of Southern Brittany is a walking and cycling paradise, there is also plenty of opportunity to fish or play a round of golf. For families there are many fun attraction parks, animal parks and aquariums. The wonderful situation of the gites on the border of Southern Brittany and the Loire Atlantique, will allow you to easily discover many attractions or just relax and enjoy the rural tranquility.

How to get to Walnut Cottage
- South Brittany Cottages are situated approximately 10 miles northeast of the town of Redon which is about 30 miles south of the city of Rennes. It is an easy drive from the ferry ports of St Malo, Cherbourg, Caen, Roscoff & Le Havre.
- There are also many flights into the international airports at Rennes, Nantes & Brest.

Perfect countryside escapeMy husband and I along with our 8 month old son stayed here for a week in July this year. The gite is located just outside a quaint village which has a bakery (less than 5 mins cycle) and tabac. We would visit the bakery in the morning and enjoyed sitting in the cottage's beautiful (and very large) garden to have our breakfast. The gite is perfectly equipped with everything you would need for self-catering. Big fridge, oven and gas stove, lots of crockery and cutlery as well as picnic and bbq equipment. The charcoal bbq outside is a good size and we really enjoyed the peaceful al fresco dining.
The gite has a spacious living area with plenty of seating as well as TV with UK channels and a good hi-fi system. We took an HDMI cable and were able to connect this to the tv to watch a few shows we had brought. There are two good-sized double rooms on the first floor, the master with lovely french doors which we kept open at night to keep us cool. The second is perfect for young children and Maria and Tony provided a comfy cot for our baby.
Tony and Maria provide extensive information in the gite, organised in folders, describing attractions in the local area. This information was very navigable and we used it like a bible every evening to decide what we wanted to do the next day. There are countless things to do in the local area, including swimming lakes, beautiful towns, beaches (around an hours drive), chateaux and lots of country markets.
There are many bikes to borrow at the gite and we were able to put our son on the back of a bike using the baby seat. Around a 10 minute cycle and you will reach the beautiful River Villaine where you can cycle along the towpath to Redon.
This is a very peaceful area and provided us with just the kind of holiday we were after - a week of lovely food, relaxing and pottering about. Thank you to Maria and Tony for a fantastic stay.Guest rating:
Beautiful gite in great, peaceful locationWe have just returned from a week in walnut cottage. The four gites, despite being situated together around a (beautiful) courtyard, offer real privacy and all have their own enormous private garden with stone BBQ. Walnut cottage is very comfortable with everything you need. Well equipped kitchen and comfy lounge downstairs. Two bedrooms and nice bathroom upstairs. The tiled floor and small windows keep it nice and cool too. There is so much to see in the area and the roads are quiet. We visited picturesque village and port of la Roche Bernard with its many creperies and artisanal shops, la Gacilly is similar with the addition of the Yves Rocher museum (really good tour), beaches at pornic , la noeveillard and damgan are lovely. Rochforte en terre is stunning with great photo opportunities. A cooler day took us to the car museum in loheac which my husband really enjoyed!! To be fair it was a well stocked and we'll laid out museum with hundreds of cars and he did accompany my daughter and I to Yves Rocher! All in all a super place to holiday - great food, local cider. Wine prices still great. The superU supermarket in guemene panfao stocks a great range - great bakery and cheese selection.
Tony and Maria are great hosts. Very approachable and friendly. They provide great folders with really useful details of everywhere you can visit.

Absolutely perfect holiday locationJust got back from Walnut Cottage at Paimbu and had to jump straight on here to review the place. Spent a wonderful week here with my partner and our two small children and will definitely be booking to go back as soon as we can!
Paimbu is a tiny hamlet just outside Masserac, a small town typical of those found throughout Brittany. Peaceful and quiet, the only sound at night is the chirruping of crickets and the odd buzzing of a fly from outside.
The cottage is compact, but was perfect for what we needed. Outside, the large enclosed (and gated!) garden was perfect for the children to run off excessive energy and equipped with an outside barbecue and covered seating area to seat four. Each cottage on site (there are four) have their own private gardens.
The weather was scorching hot and we found the cottage to be our cool haven, with it's tiled floor and comfortable furnishings it was lovely to come back to after a day exploring the area. The kitchen had every utensil required; kettle, toaster, gas stove / oven, combination microwave / grill, fridge / freezer, every type of pan imaginable and enough crockery / cutlery for 12 to eat! A lovely touch was the plastic Ikea dinner sets for toddlers and small children to save worries about our two toddlers breaking the nice china plates! .
The cottage is perfectly (but not intrusively) set up for young children, with a bed guard supplied (but not installed) high chair available and stair guards both at the top and bottom of the stair-case.
Upstairs the two bedrooms are a good size and very well presented. A twin room with velux window (and tiny character window in the front of the building) gave plenty of room (and storage) for our two kids, the double room with a Juliet balcony was perfect for our needs as well. A comfortable bed, well presented, with ample storage for what we needed as well made for an excellent nights sleep.
There are several bikes available for exploring the surrounding area and we made good use of them. The cottage is close to the river Villaine which has a great cycle that we explored thoroughly during our time here. We found the local residents friendly, helpful and very welcoming. So sad to come home, but can't wait to come back again.Guest rating:
