35 km east of the Rhone river in the upper part of the Provence, the recently restored estate Domaine du Crestet is located with its vineyard in the valley of the Ouveze. Just 3 km south of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Vaucluse department, you will find green countryside bordered on the west side by the rocky Dentelles de Montmirail (734m) and on the east side by the pre-Alpes with Mont Ventoux at a height of 1909m as a dominating feature, completely visible from the estate.
This valley has a very mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year with a long summer providing comfortable temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius in July and August. The hills and mountains around Domaine du Crestet offer many hiking and (mountain) biking trails, with beautiful views over the numerous wine fields and scattered small Provencal villages. The Ouveze river, a few hundred meters from the estate, offers various spots for swimming and multiple fishing opportunities. The Toulourenc river at 10 minutes distance offers a breathtaking canyon. The height of Mont Ventoux allows for down hill and cross country skiing on the northern slope on five pistes in colder winters, which are normally very short. With its green wooded base, well known for truffles, the bold top provides a different colour scheme effect several times a day.
Le Crestet (pop. 440) is a small protected medieval historical village on top of a hill. Surrounded by vineyards, olive and almond trees it has many small alleyways with beautiful architectural ornaments. The Financial Times recently quoted it as one of the best preserved and balanced typical small villages of Provence. At the top of the village is a small castle with a square that provides a staggering view over the valley, Mont Ventoux and Domaine du Crestet which is situated just several hundred meters east of the village center at the bottom of the hill. The village has 3 restaurants (2 in walking distance) and a bakery with daily fresh croissants just 250 m from the Domaine.
At the Domaine you can walk into the vineyards surounding the buildings, or enter the Dentelles de Montmirail that has many hiking and montainbiking tracks. We are well known as a good start point for mounting the famous Mont Ventoux (1912m) on your racing bike, the start of the climb at Malaucene is only 8 km away, thus you have a nice warming up!
Vaison-la-Romaine offers a wealth of historical monuments and a large open air museum about its romain history as wall as a amphi-theatre.

We have been visiting Domaine du Crestet for many years. We have stayed in various houses, including Grenache and Cinsault. Long before the holiday, we look forward to a warm and welcoming reception. Paul and Miriam are very friendly and very hospitable. Paul gives many great tips for visiting beautiful places in the area, walking, and cycling. In addition, Paul and Miriam have a lot of knowledge of the gastronomy of Provence. We have received great tips for wine tasting at the various caves. There is so much to do in this beautiful part of France. We've never even had lousy weather. The accommodations are spacious, clean, fully furnished, and offer sufficient privacy. If something is not right, it will be resolved immediately. The stay is always carefree. There is peace. The lovely swimming pool and the view of Mont Ventoux complete it. We can recommend it to everyone. And definitely want to come back next year.Guest rating:
Last September we stayed at Domaine du Crestet near Vaison la Romaine, in beautiful northern Provence. It was a return trip...one of many over the years since the wonderful owners, Paul and Miriam took the old domaine and converted it into something very special. We stayed in the gate, Grenache with two friends and enjoyed a week of fabulous visits, walks, food and wine delights. The weather was warm and golden sunshine everyday. As we had breakfast and evening drinks on the terrace, surrounded by exquisite views. It was wonderful to be welcomed by Paul and Miriam on our arrival, with some lovely wines and homemade canapés. As we knew the area, it was easy to revisit the great markets of the area and stock up on local produce. This is one of the best wine areas in France, Cotes de Rhone and Paul gave us lots of help in identifying the little vineyards...off the beaten track and lots of fun. Grenache is kitted out with absolutely everything you need for a holiday. It's an immaculate and comfortable gite, just like the others at Crestet. As returning guests, it's great to come back and find the consistency of quality and friendliness at Crestet. In the foothills of Mnt Ventoux, Grenache at Crestet is simply perfect.Guest rating:
My husband and I spent a wonderful week in Provence in late May, sharing Grenache with my sister-in-law and her husband—and these accommodations were certainly part of that wonderful experience. An attractive restoration/renovation of much earlier stone structures, the house preserves the character and flavor of that earlier era while nicely integrating it with all the modern amenities. Overall, an environment in which we all felt immediately at home and comfortable. The towels and linens are top notch and it was great to sink into our comfortable bed after busy days exploring and enjoying the region’s natural beauty and historical sites. The location amid vineyards and fields with beautiful views in all directions—and not on a main road—provided a peaceful and relaxing setting--& a great restaurant and excellent boulangerie are just a few minutes’ walk away. Our attractive and nicely furnished private terrace along with the well maintained landscaping added to the welcoming ambience. The hosts, Paul and Miriam, were gracious and helpful. If you are looking for accommodations to complement the beauty and character of the region, these would be hard to beat!Guest rating:
What a great two weeks we spent at the Grenache, part of the Domaine du Crestet Mas in Provence. The property is an authentic stone home set amidst the vineyards of the beautiful Vaucluse countryside, yet only a few steps away from the best bakery in the area to supply your morning repast as you watch the sun come up over Mt. Ventoux. We have stayed at the Grenache a few times before, but this time we came with another couple and shared the gîte between us. It worked perfectly - plenty of privacy in our respective airy rooms with ensuite shower in each, and a large warm open living/dining area on the ground floor, with its own private terrace. Crisp linens and well-equiped kitchen as well as outdoor grills. We loved the new boule court, and enjoyed many evenings playing petanque (hoped to have used the spacious pool but weather was too cool). The property is very well maintained, and the beautiful watercolor paintings of the provençal countryside that grace the walls - by owner Miriam Kluijtmans - add warmth and authenticity to the whole experience. As soon as we pull into the driveway at the Domaine, we immediately start to relax and smile.Guest rating:
This was my first visit to Grenache, and it was even more beautiful than the photographs! I stayed in Murier with 3 other adults for a week and it provided a spacious, well appointed setting for many dinners and gatherings. The kitchen is well supplied with everything you could need for cooking, and even an outside barbecue. The patio off the kitchen was a wonderful place to dine or just relax watching the sunset. There is even an herb garden in the corner to pick fresh herbs for cooking! The living room is charming - bight and light with high ceilings and french (of course) doors opening to an additional patio with tables and chairs. Unfortunately, we did not get to use the fireplace as it was too warm but it was a beautiful addition to the room. The mantle was lined with small votive candles that gave off a warm aura after dark. Everyone in our group was very pleased with the bedrooms. The bedding was crisp and the beds very comfortable. The gite stayed cool during the day and the ceiling fans provided excellent circulation. Paul and Miriam are wonderful hosts. We enjoyed a marvelous welcome reception the Saturday we arrived with all the other guests in attendance. This is a fabulous place to stay!Guest rating:
We are two well traveled couples who spent a wonderful week touring Provence with Grenache and Syrah as our home base. The accommodations were unique, well cared for and a pleasant retreat at the end of our busy days. The photos and description accurately reflect the environment. The ambience is authentic, relaxed and peaceful. The hospitality and helpfulness of Paul and Miriam contributed to our fabulous experience. Without reservation we would return to Domaine du Crestet, a delightful French retreat in the heart of Provence.Guest rating:
This was our second stay at Domaine du Crestet, and indeed our second stay at the gite Grenache. Our first visit was in 2010, and I am happy to say that the accommodation, the facilities, the amenities, the weather, the landscape, the food, the wine and the whole experience was even better than 4 years ago! Paul and Miriam gave us a warm welcome again, and it was good to return to Grenache.
The accommodation is perfectly situated for tours of Provence. We have driven to Avignon (only 40 minutes away), to Arles and the Camargue, Orange, Nyons, Les Baux de Provence, Tarascon as well as the area closer to Domaine du Crestet. Having two keen cyclists in the family, we can confirm that Crestet is the perfect location for all three ascents of the Ventoux. The countryside and landscape of this area is breathtakingly beautiful, and it is a true haven for cyclists - whatever your ability. You don't have to cycle up any mountains if you don't want to!
The nearby town of Vaison la Romaine (only 3kms from Domaine du Crestet) has all the shops, supermarkets, restaurants and amenities you will need, and its Roman remains are truly impressive. You can walk to two nearby restaurants: one is literally 100m away, the other being in the small hillside village of Crestet itself. There is now the very welcome addition of a boulangerie, only a very short walk from the gite.
If you are a photographer, this area has it all, from gorges and waterfalls, to mountains and hills, olive groves and vineyards, charming villages and interesting towns. If you are a cyclist.....all the above apply, and you will find yourself amongst a large multi-national throng of like minded people, either enjoying the area's gentle undulations, or pitting themselves against the challenge of the iconic Mont Ventoux. If you want to relax and enjoy Provence....the opportunities are countless.
The gite has a lovely swimming pool, surrounded by vineyards with clear views of Mont Ventoux in all its moods. After a long day in the saddle, in the car, on the bus or on foot, the pool is a great place to relax at the end of the day......or even to spend the day!
There is so much to see and do in this area that, even after two visits, we know we will be returning soon. Paul and Miriam are wonderful hosts, and their welcome is always warm and friendly. The property is perfect for a holiday base, and also as a place to relax and forget the worries of the world for a time.
We look forward to returning soon. Simon, Hilary, Tom and Will Harding

Our stay at Domain Du Crestet exceeded all our expectations; we will definitely return.
The Grenache gite felt very homely and is fully equipped and beautifully decorated. The estate is well kept and provides lovely views over the winery and hills / Mont Ventoux.
Recently a bakery opened its doors, just across the road. So all our days started fresh croissants and baguettes; what more can you wish for?
I should highly recommend this place, but I do realise this will make it even harder to book a week ourselves next time ;-)

We had a wonderful stay at Grenache and were made to feel very welcome by the owners. We found the accommodation very-well and stylishly furnished and we appreciated the very comfortable beds and the great showers. Even though it was October, the weather was good and we made use of the great swimming pool which is very well-sited with lovely views across the vineyards and to the hills beyond. We enjoyed exploring the nearby town of Vaison-la-Romaine which has plenty of cafe life, a great market and fascinating Roman ruins.
We found plenty to do in the area, visiting hill-top villages such as Le Crestet and having day-trips to Orange, Avignon and Fontaine de Vaucluse. Altogether, we had a very enjoyable holiday and we would love to return.
Guest rating:
Charmingly decorated, cozy yet spacious. Totally equipped to make one feel at home - full kitchen array of cooking utensils and dinner ware. Washer and dryer made packing light so easy. Our hosts were warm and welcoming, and very knowledgeable of local sites, wineries, eating establishments.
