Josselin (Morbihan)
Josselin is a well known medieval city, known as a 'Petite Cité de Caractère'.
Josselin is famous for its splendid baronial castle. It is a spectacle to see both day and night from the bridge, where you can have a great photo opportunity. At night the sight of the castles reflection in the river is spectacular. You can get a guided tour of the ground floor of the chateau. Nearby is the famous doll museum.
The Tourist Information Office is currently just outside the entrance to the chateau but is moving soon. The river and canal is used by pleasure boats and kayaks. There is a mooring point here.
There are a number of artists and painters who exhibit their works of art here. There is also an English Book shop in the centre.
Notre Dame de Ronciers church dominates the square, where you can sit and gaze at the various Gothic stone gargoyles whilst you have a coffee or meal in one of the lovely eateries and cafes on the square. The square is also the site of a Saturday morning market where you can find lots of lovely regional produce.
From May to September various events are organised - from a medieval festival to free concerts, all of the events are scheduled, and posters will be everywhere.
The Pardon of Notre Dame de Ronciers takes place in September. A lot of the local social life in adjoining communes is run by local associations like Young Farmers. These are held in local community centres and usually start with a specific meal like Moules Frites, and end in a disco. Also Fest Noz, many are held in the streets. You will be made most welcome and many local English speaking people who live here go to these events.
From Easter onwards you can ask for the key to the church tower in the Mairie (just behind the church in a small square) and climb to the top, where the view is amazing.
There are two good supermarkets just on the edge of the town near the N24 which are open all day long and also sell fuel. The Nantes Brest canal runs through the town . You can either walk or bicycle along the towpath in either direction.
