St Tropez (Var)
Saint-Tropez is located on the French Riviera. It is known today for its famous and wealthy guests, its history with the iconic Brigitte Bardot, and its role in the liberation of Southern France in World War II.
The town’s name derives from that of an early, semi-legendary martyr named Saint Torpes. His legend states that he was beheaded at Pisa during the reign of Nero, and that his body was placed in a rotten boat with a rooster and a dog. The body landed at the present-day location of the town.
Saint-Tropez is a shopping paradise with many shops open all the year round and luxury stores, amongst which you will find the most famous brands.
Many of the beaches around Saint Tropez offer windsurfing, sailing and canoeing equipment for rent, while others offer motorized water sports, such as power boats, jet bikes and water skiing.
Each year, in early October, a regatta is held in the bay of Saint-Tropez. This is a draw for many yachts, some up to 50 metres in length. Many tourists come to the location for this event or as a stop on their trip to Cannes, Marseille or Nice.
If you are planning to visit Saint Tropez for the day during the summer months you would be advised to park on Sainte Maxime and take the 20 minute ferry ride across the bay to Saint Tropez. To drive there can take up to two hours from Sainte Maxime as although it is not that far by road the volume of cars on the road mean that it is a slow crawl all the way. Then you have to find somewhere to park!
The ferry price is around 12 euros return (2009 price)
A good day to visit is a Tuesday as there is a large market in the morning.
