Sarthe
Located in the Pays de la Loire region, the department of Sarthe (number 72) is a relatively small, and in tourism terms, often overlooked area that has a lot to offer. The department takes its name from the River Sarthe, which flows through the region on its way to join the Loire at Angers. The area is perhaps most famous for the annual Le Mans 24 hour motor race. Dating back to 1923, this takes place partly on track and partly on closed roads and is one of the most prestigious races attracting thousands of fans from around the world every June.
In the centre of the region lies its capital, the city of Le Mans. The city is home to approximately half of the total population of the department with the remaining half scattered around the remaining, largely rural area. The city dates back to Roman times and there are number of Roman ruins that you can visit, the most notable being the Roman baths and the old town wall, which is considered to be one of the best preserved Roman walls in Europe.
Visit the beautiful Le Mans old town and you will find cobbled streets lined by 15th and 16th century houses, but dominated by the magnificent Le Mans Cathedral, constructed from the 6th through to the 14th Century. There were a number of notable historical events that occurred in the town, including the birth of King Henry II of England.
In the north of the Sarthe, the breathtaking Parc Naturel Régionale de Normandie et Maine stretches in to the region, providing great opportunities for hiking, sightseeing and mushroom hunting in the Autumn.
The department is easy to get to with excellent road links from the ports, both from Calais to the north and St Malo, Cherbourg and Roscoff to the west. By train, Paris is just 54 minutes by TGV while you can reach Le Mans in 4 hours from London via the Channel Tunnel. If you’re flying in, the nearest local airport is Angers, but the main Paris airports are also easily within reach.
